Porch Theft

The holiday season is here! During this time of year, many community members have more packages delivered to their doorstep and, unfortunately, thieves take advantage of this.

To avoid falling victim to a porch pirate, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office recommends you have items delivered when you know you’ll be home or get the OK from your employer to have packages delivered to your office.

Several retailers also offer the option to pick up an order at a near-by store, which may take extra time, but ensures that your purchases won't be left out in the open.

If you’re not home when your package arrives, you can also request that the delivery require a signature or provide delivery instructions for packages to be placed "in a non-conspicuous location."

When in doubt, ask a neighbor to grab deliveries and hold onto them. A doorbell camera can also add an extra layer of security, and, if your package is stolen, it can aid the Sheriff’s Office in identifying the thief.

If a package is stolen, please report it by calling non-emergency at 503-823-3333 or filing a report on our website.
